What is Turnover?

A turnover is when a team loses possession of the ball to the other team without taking a shot, for example through a bad pass, traveling or stepping out of bounds.

Example

A team with 18 turnovers in a 60-possession game gave the ball away on 30% of its possessions.

Why it matters in a league

Turnovers are the cheapest way to lose a game. Coaches track them because each one is a possession without a shot.
