What is Four factors?
The four factors are the four team statistics that explain most winning: shooting (eFG%), turnovers, rebounding and free throws. They were identified by the analyst Dean Oliver.
Formula
Shooting: eFG%. Turnovers: TO ÷ possessions. Rebounding: offensive rebound rate. Free throws: free throws made ÷ field goal attempts
Example
A team that wins the shooting and turnover battles but loses the rebounding battle is usually still ahead, because shooting and turnovers carry the most weight.
Why it matters in a league
A coach can use the four factors to see why a team lost, not just that it did.
