What is Effective field goal percentage (eFG%)?

Effective field goal percentage adjusts field goal percentage to give extra credit for three-pointers, because a made three is worth 50% more than a made two.

Formula

eFG% = (field goals made + 0.5 × three-pointers made) ÷ field goals attempted

Example

A player who makes 8 of 18 shots, including 3 threes, has an eFG% of (8 + 0.5 × 3) ÷ 18 = 9.5 ÷ 18 = 52.8%, higher than the plain 44.4% FG%.

Why it matters in a league

It lets a league compare a shooter who takes mostly threes with one who takes mostly twos on the same scale.
