What is Plus-minus (+/-)?

Plus-minus is the net change in the score while a player is on the court. If the player's team outscores the opponent by 6 points during their minutes, the player is +6.

Formula

+/- = team points scored − team points allowed, while the player is on the court

Example

A player on the floor for a stretch that ends 22-16 in their team's favor has a +6 for that stretch.

Why it matters in a league

It needs substitutions to be recorded, so it is only meaningful when the league tracks who is on the court. A single game is noisy; a season is more reliable.
