What is Defensive rating?
Defensive rating is the number of points a team allows per 100 possessions. Lower is better.
Formula
Defensive rating = 100 × points allowed ÷ opponent possessions
Example
A team that allows 60 points on 64 possessions has a defensive rating of 93.8.
Why it matters in a league
Total points allowed rewards slow teams. Defensive rating corrects for that.
